And then volunteer was surprised that "some people who are approved never return for their pet'. Umm,yeah, because they probably got tired of waiting and found another place, just like we did. That same Saturday, two hours after that last phone call telling them to take us off the list, we went to the place few minutes from them, that happened to have exactly two cats (so we didn't have to pick and choose whom we have to leave behind) and while in Helping Paw everything seemed like a such an ordeal, everything went so smoothly in that new place, and in fact they were sincerely happy that those cats get to stay together (they were also twins, but much younger, 10 weeks) and right now they are playing, playing, playing at my feet.
Which brings be to the second point. The volunteer said that their policy is to call only if you are approved. If you are not approved they don't call you so you could start looking for some other homeless pet. Not a very good costumer service to you or this X pet who is out somewhere needing a home.

Wow! Thumbs up for A Helping Paw!
They helped me pick out the perfect cat, even though they were swamped, and I can not be more grateful. The volunteers are very nice people and their new location is wonderful. The animal rooms are very nice and keep the kitties cozy and happy, which I love! I also enjoy shopping in their thrift shop. I always seem to find something to buy.
I recommend that you check them out, it's worth it!
they were so cute in the viewing window, I wasnt sure if I was allowed in though
We went there one day, it was Tuesday, to try to give a good home for two cats. We picked them out, they were 8 months old twins and volunteer said she nursed them when they were just babies, so we figured these cats have been there for many-many months. I filled the application, and when volunteer called the adoption counselor we got the first negative surprise. Counselor said she already has "couple' of applications waiting on them. The negative part wasn't that someone else wanted them too - I think all animal lovers agree that if a pet gets into a home it is a good thing, bad surprise was that although the cats had been there for months, counselor, who should have pets best interests at heart, had applications waiting and she didn't have time to go through them. We went there next day, on Wednesday, still nothing. My husband had set his heart on those cats, and really fell in love with them so instead of looking somewhere else we kept waiting. Finally on Saturday, 5 days after we had applied, we called again, to be told that our applications are still waiting, and cats are still in the shelter, so nobody else has been approved either.
and reading other reviews please keep in mind these are volunteers, dont take your anger out on the kitties !
zero stars...Kiku, glad to see it wasn't just us and now we've found out from the pet store in town that we're not the only ones. They're crazy. And every time you call you get a different answer. Very unprofessional and very sad when you're trying to give a home to a needy cat. It's fine that they are all volunteers and we appreciate that - there is no excuse for being lied to.
Yes, it is a non kill shelter and volunteers are great but I still have few issues.
A helping paw has a good idea, and I'm sure intentions are good behind it, but it seems like everything good gets stuck in bureaucracy, at least in our case it did, and in the case of those people who also applied for the same pets. And, also, you could make that rejection phone call so people know to look elsewhere. After all, there are other animals out there who also need a home.
My husband, who, as I already mentioned, really fell in love with them, offered that if we get approved this same day, we not only pay for cats 200, but also the shelter owed pet food money to the company (400$) and he pays this as well. Or, if the counselor is not ready to work on that application that day, just take us off the waiting list so nobody else gets stuck waiting because of our application. One nice lady explained that food bill money and adoption really are two different things and she can't do that. Fair enough. The main issue is that we had waited 5 days, others before us even longer then that, and instead of getting to work, those cats were still after all those months, in the shelter, and people were waiting at home not knowing if they get approved or not.
